Should College Athletes get paid?
One of the many controversial topics of discussion in sports today is whether or not college athletes should be getting paid for playing sports for their school or be able to sign endorsement deals. This became a really pressing issue nationwide when California’s governor, Gavin Newsom signed a bill allowing college athletes to sign endorsement deals, while still playing for their school. There are many justifications for both sides of the argument on whether they should be able to earn money or not, and if so what are the limits and restrictions on how much.
PCNN decided to find out for themselves and asked student athletes at panther creek how they feel about the matter. When asked Sophomore Nicole Deoliveira how much college athletes should be paid she said “a decent amount depending on how much their jerseys sell for and how skilled they are”. When asked Senior Sean Magoon, should certain sports be paid more than others, he responded with “yes, because traditionally football and basketball bring in more money than others”. Senior Moustapha Conte said “it is necessary for college athletes to get paid, so they can use that money to pay for things that the college doesn’t already cover in their scholarship”. Most of our student athletes at Panther Creek believe that college athletes should be allowed to get paid.
