Pre-season basketball
The 2019-2020 men’s basketball season has officially kicked off this year at Panther Creek. The catamounts have played in three non-conference games so far, one against Leesville Road and two against Apex. The team was able to overcome Apex on November 21st with a 75-58 win. However, on Monday the 25th, the catamounts fell just short of the pride, 65-67. The cats were able to bounce back in their matchup last Tuesday the 26th as they took on Apex once again and prevailed with a 89-63 win.
Two weeks ago in the game against Apex, according to Max Preps, Armon Muldrew, a senior on the team was the leading scorer with 21 points, followed by junior, Daylen Berry with 18 points and junior, Dylan Drinkwater with 16 points. When the cats played the cougars for the second time Armon Muldrew and Daylen Berry were the top scorers with 16 points, followed by David Butners with 13 points and Dylan Drinkwater with 11 points.
Last week in the game against Leesville, according to Max Preps, Armon Muldrew was once again the leading scorer in the game with 15 points. Junior, Daylen Berry added 3 more blocks to his personal stats, leaving him with 6 total blocks so far this year and Jeff McKnight had 8 rebounds
Armon Muldrew is a new addition to the men’s basketball team this year. This is his first year playing for coach, Shawan Robinson. The boys seem to have a strong connection with him and he brings a lot to the team as the highest scorer this season. Dylan Drinkwater, a junior on the team says, “Armon is a great teammate. He brings another threat to the team and he is also a big help with guarding bigger teams because we are a much smaller team this year. He is also a great leader, even though this is only his first year. Even though he goes through a lot, he is a great teammate and friend on and off the court and he is like a brother to me”.
Although our team is lacking height this year, the catamounts are looking to dominate in shooting and driving to the paint. With over 7 shooting guards on the team, the cats will stop at nothing to perfect their shots and rack up points.
Students and teachers at Panther Creek await an amazing turnout this year and expect the team to make it to the playoffs, as they did last year. When asked how far the men’s basketball team will go this year, Trevor Barrett, a sophomore on the junior varsity team says, “we should be conference champs and go far to states”.
According to students, the games are fun and exciting. Students look forward to not only the game but to the themes, chants and intensity. Catamount Chaos student section leader, Ryan Molter says, “My favorite thing about basketball season is getting to talk smack to the other team”.
The catamounts have three more games until the holiday break starts, including the traditional fight for 55 game versus rivals, Green Hope.
