In this video, we explained several different current events that are being discussed on social media and among Panther Creek students. The first current event topic was the relationship between North and South Korea at the 2018 Olympics. Many say that the Olympics have been bringing the two prior enemies together in peace and unity. This has been seen through their cheerleader’s waving at each other and the two nations marching together under one flag. In this video, Sophomore Susanne Sweeney commented that she felt this was a major step forward for the two nations to come together in peace.

The next topic was the recent Snapchat App update. In the recent update, a lot of changes were made to the app’s appearance and functionality. Many snapchat users were upset by the changes, especially since it automatically updated on everyone’s phones, despite them having turned off their automatic updates in the App store. Many individuals have said that they plan to stop using snapchat altogether due to those changes.

The next topic was the launch of SpaceX by Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla. The launch was done in hopes of preparing the way for Human exploration of Mars. Senior Peter Ballentine commented that it was a big step forward for space exploration and technology in general.

Another topic we discussed was the Hawaiian Missile Crisis. A couple weeks ago, civilians of Hawaii were alerted about a missile threat that caused a lot of worry and chaos amongst them, which turned out to be a mishap. Senior Madi Middledorf commented about how she felt that this could have been avoided and can be prevented in the future by more thorough fact checking and approval of those alerts before being sent out to civilians.

Finally, we discussed the tide pod challenge that sent a lot of young social media users to hospitals in need of Poison Control. There were 39+ poison control cases due to tide pod ingestion in January of 2018, which is more than the entire year total for 2017. Peter Ballentine commented that it was a silly internet fad that got out of hand and unfortunately led to the injury of many.
