At the conclusion of the 2024 election, North Carolinians elected Mo Green for the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Winning with only a slim majority, he plans to “make a better NC school system”. Some of his policies include higher pay for teachers, increased school safety specifically with a higher focus on mental health resources, and a stronger CTE program to prepare students entering the workforce.
Winning with a total 51.09% of votes, many students around Panther Creek have never heard the name Mo Green. Only 46.2% of students knew about getting a new superintendent, and even less could recall seeing advertisements for Mo Green in his campaign cycle.
Despite these numbers, some students are hopeful for the Green’s new policies. Senior Avery Mobillia states she agrees with most every policy he has said to work on. More specifically she states, “I think the mental health crisis (policies) will be important. I see a lot of students that struggle and a lot of teachers that refuse to accommodate students. I know that when I was in 10th grade, I had a lot of mental health problems, and I struggled a lot because teachers did not seem to listen to me. I think that having a superintendent like that who focuses on problems like that will be beneficial to a lot of students.”
Green’s campaign won over Michele Morrow, who had a very different view for the school system, as seen on PCNN’s story Michele Morrow: The NC Superintendent Primary Election Winner.
Green will act as superintendent beginning in January. We will have to wait and see how his proposed changes will affect North Carolina’s schools overall and the success of our public school system.
