Super Bowl LIX was played this past Sunday, February 9th. The Kansas City Chiefs were looking for their third consecutive Super Bowl ring. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes led the team with five Super Bowl appearances, the most of any quarterback under 30. A vengeful Philadelphia Eagles team arrived with only their 2022 Super Bowl loss (against the same team) in the back of their mind; the sting that still burns. Mirroring the majority of the country, a PCNN poll shows 75% of respondents wanted the Eagles to win the Super Bowl. A game full of revenge, Eagles players were willing to do whatever it takes to get the ring that was once stolen from them.
The Philadelphia Eagles had an impressive season, especially when considering their demotivating starting record of 2-2. Eagles fans everywhere began to blame head coach Nick Sirianni; even rumors of him getting fired started to spread. Early in the season, the dispirited Eagles team headed for a bye week holding only questions of uncertainty. Had the Eagles returned to their past? Were they again the team known only for their irrevocably poor record?
Despite these setbacks, the Philadelphia Eagles miraculously beat the odds and came back to win their next ten games in a row, eventually making it to the playoffs and inevitably to the Super Bowl.
With a final score of 40-22, the Eagles triumphed over the Chiefs. The weeks prior to the Super Bowl, fans across the country speculated the rumor of the NFL rigging specific games to allow certain teams to win. In the 2024-2025 season, the Kansas City Chiefs arguably had the most of these games, their Super Bowl run causing controversy amongst fans across the nation. One of their most notorious games of the season was their win over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship. In the game, questionable calls- including missed penalties against the Chiefs, a controversial fourth down call, and a questionable catch ruling- enhanced these accusations.
Nonetheless, the Chiefs made it to their third consecutive Super Bowl. Despite their questionable Super Bowl run, the Chiefs lost in a one sided win to the Eagles. The Philadelphia Eagles won their second Super Bowl ring ever, their first being their 2018 win over the Patriots. In that sense, the Eagles winning over the Chiefs is a modern day Avengers triumphing over a seemingly unbeatable Thanos.
