An icy road on a winter’s day.

During this time of year, roads can be dangerous to drive on due to the freezing temperatures combined with precipitation. Though it may only snow a few times a year in Cary, it’s common to find ice on the roads throughout winter. Ice-covered roads pose a serious risk to student drivers, but with the right knowledge, roads can become a safer place. What can Panther Creek students do to drive safer in these difficult road conditions?

According to The Weather Channel, these steps should be taken in order to ensure safe winter driving:

  1. Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you.

  2. Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake.

  3. Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists.

  4. Keep your lights and windshield clean.

  5. Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills.

  6. Don’t use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.

When driving on icy roads, things can change quickly.  It’s important to be careful and look out for drivers who may not be as experienced with the weather conditions and appear to be having difficulty. Many student drivers are not aware of how cars handle in the ice or snow when compared to a dry road. Using the steps above can help make your winter a safe one.
