2018: Good Or Bad?

One month into 2018 and it’s already proved itself to be an interesting year. PCNN set out to find Panther Creek students’ opinions on these occurrences. With so much going on, PCNN had to decide which events to talk about and settled on 4 main ones: the Grammys, the discovery of the red handfish, the recent winter storms, and the Kentucky school shooting.

The Grammys has been around since 1958, making this year’s the 60th celebration of music. Artists such as Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar, and Chris Stapleton winning multiple categories. While most were excited about the winners, some disagreed. “I feel like two people that should have received Grammys but didn’t were Kesha and Logic,” said Senior Destini Thomas. She elaborated that she believed this, “because they wrote about worse series of events.”

Recently in Tasmania, a rare discover was made: a colony of red handfish. This amazing finding prompted PCNN to see what PC students thought about this fish. Yoel Kiflezghi, a Senior, responded, “I don’t like it… I don’t like it, it’s pretty ugly,” when shown a picture of this scarce fish. “It has hands?!” asked Sophomore CJ Johnson, “That’s weird.”

When asked about the winter storms, Erich Haagen said, “They’ve definitely impacted travel and everything, but I’m not mad we get out of school.”

In Kentucky, there was a school shooting at Marshall County High School, resulting in 2 deaths and 18 injuries. This is important news and hits very close to home for some of our PC students, like CJ Johnson. CJ shares that his mother used to live in Kentucky, and he was born there. He sums up by saying, “Just to think that if we stayed over there, that stuff could’ve happened right around the corner.”
