What Actions Should be Taken to Prevent School Shootings?
In this story, students share their thoughts and insights on the recent school shootings.
Since the recent shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in February, where 17 people were killed, discussions have been sparked about school shootings and how to prevent them. Of the students interviewed, all of them felt that stricter gun laws are an appropriate solution to preventing school shootings the future.
Many Panther Creek students find the frequency of school shootings in the United States alarming, “It’s just ridiculous how much power people have over each other when they have these weapons,” says senior Jasmine Hunjan. There has been much dispute regarding actions that should be taken to prevent these tragedies from happening again, some believe that putting stricter gun laws in place will be a solution to the issue, while many argue that school shootings are caused by people with mental illnesses and not solely by access to weapons.
“We do need stricter gun control and we need to have more rules enforcing how early people can get guns,” says junior, James Pillar.
On March 14th, several Panther Creek students participated in the national school walkout, the purpose of which, according to the women’s march twitter page was to “Demand congress to take action to stop gun violence.” Of the students interviewed, all of them supported the walkout and planned on participating. Dominant Elting said, “I feel like it’s a positive thing to do because the students have somewhat of a voice.”
