It seems that this year’s spirit week activities have left the average student feeling rather unfulfilled. Spirit week is meant to be a 5 day period full of fun and interesting activities for students to engage in, so that they may find more enjoyment in the average school day.
However, this year, students at Panther Creek High School seem to be displeased with the activities provided to us.
In fact, sophomore Sanvi Kattamreddy said “I think spirit week is a really fun thing to do for homecoming, and it gives more motivation to do like anything, but I feel like if there were more interesting topics, then more people would participate.” Kattamreddy went on to talk about how the topics just didn’t seem that interesting, and could have been much more interactive like the previous years “Anything But A Backpack¨ day.
Junior Lilly Lewis said she was “very disappointed with the student council¨ for this year’s Spirit Week themes.
This year, the themes were Bullying Prevention Monday, Twin Tuesday, Pajama Wednesday, Dress like a Kindergartener Thursday, and White Out for Friday’s football game.
Mondays and Thursdays activities were undoubtedly where we saw the least participation from not only students but even teachers, further showing the lack of interest.
In general, students seem to view spirit week as a fun concept and something they would normally enjoy, but alongside the low interest in spirit week activities, this year’s Powderpuff game did not seem to be popular either. Most of the attendees were parents, with only a handful of students in the crowd.
School spirit this year doesn’t appear to be a priority for the average student anymore. However, at the Friday pep rally, spirits seemed to be higher. There was more verbal participation from the student body and more smiling faces beaming with adoration for the sports teams, especially when the teams engaged in tug-of-war.
The rally was a good way to get students more excited for spirit week. Some even appeared to be looking forward to seeing their friends and peers out on the field, enjoying themselves with tasteful theatrics and games.
However, students were not the only ones to find delight in the rally; a plethora of teachers could be seen watching the activities from the bleachers, on the field, and even behind the fences, looking to be fairly interested and pleased with the student participation.
Of course, this is not to say that a simple singular event would be capable of increasing our school spirit at large, but it is worth a mention that the very same night we saw a generous amount of students adorning white clothing at the Homecoming football game. The stands were packed, and a sea of white supported Panther Creek through all four quarters of what was ultimately a loss, but spirits were the highest they had been all week. Maybe next year will bring fresh themes that students will get more excited about, and the Creek will see more participation throughout the week.
